The Scottish Coastal Forum, on behalf of the Scottish Government, is to consider the criteria by which Scottish Marine Regions (SMRs) might be defined. As a first step, a stakeholders' workshop is to be rheld in Edinburgh on 13th March.

The Scottish Marine Bill consultation; "Sustainable Seas for All", identified SMRs as "the means by which marine planning and management takes place at sub-Scotland level". In due course, it will be for Marine Scotland, which comes into being on 1st April, to identify SMRs. As a first step and in line with other workstreams supporting the development of the Scottish Marine Bill during 2009, the project will offer the Scottish Government some independant, initial thoughts from external stakeholders on what they consider may be appropriate for this new management and planning regime.
